From the city to the global ecological collapse
Strengths and risks for Vietnam

By M. Serge Salat, the Director-General of the International Institute for Sustainable Cities

In 1900, the world had 160 million urban residents, 1 billion in 1950 and today we urbanize 1 billion people every 10 years. This rapid urban transition leads to a rapid increase in the consumption of natural resources to feed the ever-increasing metabolism. This phenomenon is amplified by the expantion of cities across the entire planet. Without corrective mechanisms, this expansion and globalization can lead to an ecological collapse – climate change is a first symptom. Although at the very beginning of its urban transition, Vietnam faces the risk of ecological and social destruction. However, it has many strengths to build an urban civilisation that respects the fundamentally Vietnamese history, climate and lifestyles.
