Beat Presser

Oasis of Silence
a collection of 64 black and white photographs by Beat Presser documenting the practice of Theravada Buddhism throughout Southeast Asia.

It is with great pleasure that Art Vietnam presents both Beat Presser’s “Oasis of Silence” and the workshop/cultural exchange project “My Oasis of Silence“. Please join us at 6pm on March 28, 2008 at Art Vietnam Gallery to celebrate what promises to be an exciting month for photography in Vietnam.

From the ashes a Phoenix rises. Ascension often courts tragedy and turns the unthinkable into the remarkable. Decades ago in Thailand, Beat Presser suffered a spinal injury that would change the trajectory of his life. With the aid of a Buddhist abbey, the artist embarked on the well worn path leading from ruin towards rebirth. Beat Presser was slowly able to heal himself and through this process became deeply connected to the life of the ascetic, and to Buddhism. Since his recovery Beat Presser has consciously inhabited a realm where personal growth, selflessness, community, and artistic exploration are inter-spliced. He has traveled for decades throughout Southeast Asia documenting both Theravada Buddhism and its followers. Beat Presser’s personal journey lead to his “Oasis of Silence” exhibition; an exhibition whose intimate holiness is a medium through which the viewer may also celebrate their own sense of quietude and peace.

Opening – Fri, 28 Mar, 6 pm

Beat Presser will also be giving an artist’s lecture and multimedia presentation at the Hanoi Cinematheque on Thursday March 27, 2008. The evening will cover not only Beat Presser’s work with Theravada Buddhism but will be a more comprehensive look at the entirety of the artist’s career, ranging from his work done with Werner Herzog to a collection of images weaned from the highlands of Switzerland. The breadth of Beat’s work and the depth of his photographic knowledge promise to make for an interesting evening for photographers and photography enthusiasts alike.

Attention photographers: Beat Presser will conduct a 2-week workshop/cultural exchange project entitled “My Oasis of Silence”. For more information please see the ‘Info for Artists‘ page of Hanoi Grapevine.
