From the press release:
The movie ‘Girl with a Suitcase’, directed by Valerio Zurlini in 1961, talks about a girl named Aida (Claudia Cardinale), who is deserted by her lover and so decides to travel alone to the big city, Milan. Her former lover’s brother, Lorenzo (Jacques Perrin), takes her in, protecting her and the two become lovers. The couple faces many obstacles because of their young age (Lorenzo being only 16) and because of Lorenzo’s family, which tries to stop this cross-class affair. Aida begins a relationship with a new man but Lorenzo is unwilling to let her go.
In filming this delicate and tender study of a difficult young love, the director Zurlini seems to write poetically with images of Parma (Emilia-Romagna, Italy) as a town of aged quietness. With balance and sensibility, Zurlini describes the birth of a sentiment in this coming-of-age film where reality and a sense of enchantment walk the same path. Claudia Cardinale portrays, with a hint of masculinity, a young woman, victim of her desires and of her sentimental inexperience. In this film we begin to see traces of the great Italian cinema.
