Italian Film Festival: Women in Cinema
a tribute to great Italian actresses of the past and present

La Ciociara (Two Women)
by Vittorio De Sica
starring Sofia Loren
From the press release:
The fourth movie of the Film Festival “Women in Cinema” will be screened on March 26th at 7 pm at Hanoi Cinematheque.
Directed by Vittorio De Sica in 1960, La ciociara tells the story of a mother, Cesira (interpreted by the worlwide famous actress Sofia Loren), and her devoutly religious teenage daughter Rosetta.
The story takes places during World War II. While allies were bombing Rome, Cesira and her daughter fled south to their native Ciociaria, a poor, mountainous region of Italy. Out there, Cesira attracts the attention of a young local intellectual with communist sympathies, Michele (Jean Paul Belmondo).
Adapted by De Sica himself with the collaboration of Cesare Zavattini from a novel written by Alberto Moravia, this movie portrays an intimate look of the anguish and destruction wrought by the war. If it’s true that the screen adaptation lacks the political anger of Moravia’s novel, the movie represents surely the Italian neorealism stream at its best.
The Film Festival Women in Cinema is included in the 2008 Italian Cultural Season which aims not only to pay a tribute to the complex world of women but also to provide an occasion for reflection and discussion, and finally to promote mutual understanding and contact.
In this context the Film Festival is conceived as a tribute to great Italian actresses of the past and present.
Every second Wednesday of the month, a selection of masterpieces of Italian cinema will be screened. The Film Festival is destined to become an essential stop on the cultural scene in Hanoi.
